Names January 7, 2010

Talula

Thor

So, my husband is the only person so far I have shared this with. Branching out for me can be hard. Out of many conversations we have already had about the blog one of the things he commented on was that calling our children G & M seemed so impersonal.

OK. Maybe I am paranoid, but I am not comfortable sharing where I live, my children’s names or many other personal details. So what can we call our kids and still keep their identity basically protected?

His suggestion was the names we used for them when they were in utero. We had a most loving family member – who will remain nameless – make a negative comment about the name we were considering for our first born if it were a boy. It was a boy, and we stuck with the name. But from that comment forward, whenever someone asked what names we were thinking of, we said “Thor if it’s a boy and Talula if it’s a girl”. So those are my kids names for the purpose of this blog.

I have a blog? Huh? I am not a blogger (is that the right term?). I subscribe to a few RSS feeds, there are many more that I have no doubt I would enjoy – but the time eludes me. And when I do sit down to read the blogs I enjoy, the time slips away from me un-noticed. It scares me a bit to be honest.

Anyway, I have a blog. Why? A friend asked, simple as that. This is a friend that I have known for 3 short years in my 40+ years of life. But, oh, the things that this woman has given me, my family, my children, is immeasurable. So a blog seems like an easy payback.

What is blog is going to be like? I have no idea. If you are reading it, you may know who asked me to start it – so you have a general gist of what this will be about. For the most part this will be about me, my family, my children and anything that comes up as we all grow up.

For those of you who do not know why you are reading this, or why I am writing this, her name is Vicki and the program is Parenting on Track (see website of same name). I was introduced to Vicki just over 3 years ago when my youngest child (a daughter who will be from here on in known as M) was about 4 weeks old. My son (G) was nearly 3 at the time. They are now 3 and 6. My son’s daycare was sponsoring “some parenting class” that, with the help of a number of generous sponsors, was being offered for free. Why not go? I have a newborn, gets me out of the house and, let’s be frank, my parenting tools could use some help. Big time. My poor husband; long story short – I tortured him for weeks trying to explain – and failing miserably – all Vicki-isms (because I was going to the class alone) until he finally agreed to go to another class and then he was on board. Yes, we had the luck of seeing Vicki “live” – several times as a matter of fact. Unfortunately she can only spread herself so thin and still be able to parent from her best, AND to be there for those of us who cannot figure out this parenting thing on our own. She has put the program on DVD and we are about to embark on doing the program again. The beauty of the DVD? we can watch it again, and again, and again. And we always learn from it – ’cause we are always in a different space with our kids and take different things from the program. I am not even going to try to explain the fundamentals of Parenting on Track, I will not do it justice, just go to the website.

As for this blog? I will attempt to blog often, but briefly (I’m hoping this will be my most wordy post) – mostly due to my beliefs regarding blogs mentioned in the first paragraph. I hope that if you are reading it, you will come back and comment often. AND if this thing is around when my kids are old enough to read it and can surf the web; I thank you for letting me share glimpses into our family and I apologize for any embarrassment that may have occurred as a result. The same goes to my husband who I believe can read already. Love you three.
